The Responsible Coaching Movement

The Responsible Coaching Movement is a system-wide movement that is being led and coordinated by the Coaching Association of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. The Responsible Coaching Movement is a call to action for all Parents, Club Associations, Sports Organizations and Coaches to implement realistic change to ensure the health and safety of athletes is maintained on and off the ice, field or pool.

  • Rule of Two

    The first principle of the Responsible Coaching Movement is the RULE OF TWO.

    The Rule of Two stipulates that there will always be two screened and NCCP trained or certified coaches with an athlete especially a minor athlete. In the event that a second screened and NCCP Trained or certified coach is not available then a screened volunteer, parent or adult can be recruited.

    Even when we are coming together virtually we need to ensure that Rule of Two is still in place. The Coaching Association of Canada recognized that with the increase of virtual training and coaching sessions there needed to be protocols in place to ensure safety of athletes and coaches.

  • Background Screening

    The second principle of the Responsible Coaching Movement is to ensure all volunteers participate in a screening process. This includes a Criminal Record Check and an application process for coaches applying to coach.

  • Ethical Behaviour

    The third principle of the Responsible Coaching Movement is Ethical Behaviour. All Coaches and Volunteers must complete Respect in Sport Training or a comparable program. Coaches complete Making Ethical Decisions modules and evaluations.

    Making Ethical Decisions can be completed online through virtual courses, home study or in person in a classroom setting. To find an upcoming MED course visit viaSport’s Course Calendar.

    MED is required by Ringette BC for all levels of coaching certification.

Safe Sport Training

The Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) has released their Safe Sport Training module. The Safe Sport Training is FREE and includes modules for:

  • Decision -Makers
  • Coaches
  • Athletes

The course covers the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent Abuse and Maltreatment in Sport. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Commit to Kids

Commit to Kids is a national organization that seeks to prevent and end child abuse and exploitation. Commit to Kids safe sport training seeks to educate coaches, parents and decision -makers on the best ways to prevent and protect children from abuse.

Canadian Sport Helpline

Introduced in 2019 to help support athletes and other sport participants who are experiencing abuse in sport. The Helpline is completely anonymous and available to everyone across Canada.

Access the helpline toll free from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Eastern Time), seven days a week by telephone, text, live chat or email in both official languages.

The Canadian Sport Helpline is funded by Government of Canada.
